Unpacking The Brief – First Person Narrative From George Q:
The brief from Showmax was to create striking key visual images for their new show, The Mommy Club van die Hoofstad. A key requirement was to incorporate jacaranda flowers to capture the essence and ambiance of Pretoria. My task? To deliver three sets of visuals—Teaser visuals, Launch visuals, and Maintenance visuals.
Since we were past jacaranda season, we had to get creative. That meant using a mix of stock images and AI-generated backgrounds to recreate the lush purple blooms. In the end, both AI and stock imagery played a role, while all the retouching was handled in-house to ensure a seamless and polished look.
For the launch image, we needed a vintage convertible—an essential element to add a sense of classic sophistication. Luckily, I had worked on a shoot a few months prior featuring a beautiful vintage convertible, so I reached out to the owner. The car was perfect, and soon, we were ready to bring the vision to life.
We photographed and filmed the ladies in the convertible, shooting outdoors to make the most of natural light. To minimize unwanted reflections on the windscreen, we used negative fill lighting—an essential trick to keep the visuals clean and professional.
With a large team on set, the energy was electric. From Art Direction and Wardrobe—who worked tirelessly to source every detail for the set—to the Make-up and Hairstyling team ensuring the ladies looked flawless, every department played a crucial role. Even the caterers kept the crew fuelled and energised throughout the long shoot. It was a true collaborative effort, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with such a dedicated and talented team. Their passion and hard work brought this project to life, and the final visuals truly capture the spirit of The Mommy Club van die Hoofstad.
