DJ Zinhle marks the follow up single since the release of summer anthem, Indlovu, with her first single of the year, Intombi Yo Muntu. The single marks the reunion between DJ Zinhle and Umlilo vocalist, Rethabile.
The single was inspired by DJ Zinhle’s latest collaboration with McDonald’s for the Spicy Smokey Fusion series. In four episodes, DJ Zinhle created a single which borrows from maskandi and house principles.
The single is described as: “DJ Zinhle and Rethabile have proven to be a winning combination. The two reunite for their sophomore collaborative single, Intombi Yo Muntu. On this single the two reference their isiZulu heritage in a celebratory maskandi-influenced house single. “
The result is a summer hit single which continues to affirm DJ Zinhle as one of the leading musical influences for what summer should sound likeInstrumentally, DJ Zinhle’s arrangement makes the world of the song clear from the opening solo strings reminiscent of most opening maskandi introductions. Following the break from the intro, DJ Zinhle’s signature production style of building a song then begins with synthesized hi-hats and keys. Sonically, the song builds towards the crescendo in the middle of the song before descending into the outro.
Lyrically, Rehtabile in maskandi fashion tells the story of her being in love. Specifically, with a man who might not be financially affluent. But Rethabile makes it clear that she is not tempted by the promise of wealth by other suitors. Moreover, the song showcases the growth of the musician’s voice since their first collaboration as she layers her voice in different keys to provide dimensions to the song.
