On Saturday, 8 February 2025, the Soweto Theatre will come alive with the celebration of South Africa’s rich musical legacy when renowned guitarist, composer, and cultural visionary Billy Monama presents the 4th edition of his critically acclaimed concert series, Back to the Future: The 30 Years of SA Democracy.
Supported by the National Arts Council, this one-night concert is more than just music—it’s a powerful journey through three decades of democracy, told through the universal language of music. Combining South Africa’s historical rhythms with Monama’s personal 28-year artistic journey, the event offers an evening of reflection, unity, and hope.
With its masterful blend of music, storytelling, and art, Back to the Future has become one of South Africa’s most anticipated cultural events. Curated and directed by Monama, this year’s edition holds special significance, marking the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy.
The concert is divided into eight compelling segments, each representing a vital aspect of South Africa’s evolving identity. These include Genesis, exploring the roots of South African music; Black Consciousness, showcasing music’s role in liberation; Tribute to the Masters, honoring legendary musicians; and Tribute to South African Women, celebrating the women who have enriched the nation’s soundscape.
The lineup features spellbinding performances from Moneoa, known for her soulful melodies, and the captivating Zama Jobe, alongside Monama. Together, they will deliver a genre-defying experience that spans jazz, kwaito, Afrosoul, and Afro-jazz.
In addition to the concert, a masterclass will be held on 17 February 2025 at AMPD Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg. Designed for aspiring musicians, educators, and cultural practitioners, the session will provide mentorship and insights from industry leaders.
“Masterclasses like these are vital for preserving and growing our musical heritage,” Monama explains. “We’re not just celebrating music—we’re ensuring its legacy for future generations.”
Since its inception, Back to the Future has drawn more than 6,000 attendees, consistently selling out venues. Feedback underscores its cultural impact, with 95% of attendees calling it emotionally meaningful.
